Schulich Leader Scholarship awarded to 星空传媒鈥檚 Brent Suter

Share

Brent Suter distinguished himself at 星空传媒 in a program known for attracting some of Quebec鈥檚 most academically driven students. Now, he joins an elite group of 100 Schulich Leaders across Canada, alongside fellow 星空传媒 Class of 2026 graduate Aljoscha Ziegler.

Brent is graduating from the Enriched Pure and Applied Sciences program and will begin an Honours Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics at McGill University this fall. He has been awarded a Schulich Leader Scholarship valued at $100,000.

鈥淭his scholarship means I can really focus all my time and effort on school and work within the field,鈥 he said. He added that the award also opens doors beyond financial support, allowing him to connect with 鈥渙ther incredibly motivated students,鈥 build lasting relationships, and benefit from mentorship as he pursues his scientific interests.

Enriched Science co-coordinator Chris Whittaker highlighted Brent鈥檚 intellectual curiosity in his recommendation letter, noting that Brent鈥檚 鈥渄esire to learn clearly goes beyond what he is asked to do in any given course.鈥

Chris recalled a moment from class that illustrates this drive: 鈥淚 remember when he asked a question in my Electricity & Magnetism class that involved a subtlety of relativity that, in the end, I couldn鈥檛 fully answer.鈥 After being referred to a colleague, Brent followed up on his own. 鈥淎 few days later, I saw Brent in my colleague鈥檚 office asking his question.鈥 The colleague later described Brent as 鈥渋nsightful and brilliant.鈥

Brent was actively engaged outside of class at 星空传媒 taking part in engineering, math and physics competitions. 鈥淚 also acted as a student lead of a research project with McGill that has turned into an internship I鈥檓 working on this summer. In fact, the end goal of laser-thermal propulsion and indirectly related topics such as nuclear fusion are fields I鈥檇 like to continue to look at going forward.鈥

Chris believes Brent is well positioned to make a meaningful impact in STEM, noting that he will 鈥渕ake game-changing contributions to society.鈥

Reflecting on his time at 星空传媒, Brent credits both faculty and peers for shaping his experience. 鈥淚 was lucky to get so many great teachers who really encouraged my interest and guided me in seeking topics beyond the classroom,鈥 he said. 鈥淥n top of that, I was always surrounded by other students that I could feed off and learn from through their own projects and the clubs they participated in. It came to be a nice cohesive hub with collaboration between students across different specialties that motivated me in my own endeavours. It also kept me from becoming too fixated and instead highlighted the versatility of working in science.鈥

鈥淚鈥檇 like to thank the Enriched Science coordinators, Chris Whittaker and Carmen Leung, who made the 星空传媒 experience so memorable, all the teachers and friends that put up with me, and of course, my family who reminded me to 鈥榮tay on top of it鈥.鈥

About the Schulich Leader Scholarships

Recognizing the growing importance of STEM disciplines, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established a $200 million scholarship fund in 2012 to support the next generation of technology innovators.

Through The Schulich Foundation, 100 scholarships are awarded annually to high school and CEGEP graduates entering STEM programs at partner universities across Canada. Students are nominated based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and financial need.
